This paper discusses the potential of artificial intelligence technology in supporting decision making. Special attention is given to the early phases of decision making, particularly problem structuring. In this context the role of decision analytic methods is emphasized, since these methods have been developed to help the decision maker address problems with no evident structure. Finally a prototype system containing three decision analytic tools is described.
