Abstract

The results of cultural urban strategies in physical spaces can
be called Cultural Performance Architecture (CPA) in order to
differentiate this from other types of architectural justifications.
CPA refers to service and welfare architecture, where
cultural strategies have a key role in the development of a
place and smarter cities. The design of services and welfare is
becoming crucial for the development of culture. The urgency
for CPA lays in the competition between city regions, the increased
freedom of choice in consumer affordances, social
sustainability (increasing diversity and tolerance) and the
growing importance of media. All of these have undermined
the solely physical architecture. People are used to consume
and utilize product families and identifiable brands in other
fields than architecture, for example in digital technology. Why
not in urban design?
