Creation of an Ideal Housing Estate – the Finnish Garden City Tapiola

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingConference contributionScientificpeer-review

Abstract

The paper focuses on the garden city of Tapiola near Helsinki. Tapiola provides an interesting case through which this study aims to analyse the relationship between an existing piece of architecture and how the meanings associated with it have been produced. In order to do this, particular atten- tion is given to the concept of «ideal type» developed by Max Weber. The paper asserts that Tapiola has been given an exemplary role: to a certain extent it represents all Finnish housing complexes.
