Abstract

This paper focuses on one specific suburb: Tapiola garden city built close to Helsinki, Finland. We suggest that Tapio-la provides an interesting case through which to analyse the relationship between an existing piece of architecture and how the meanings associated with it have been produced. In order to do this, we draw on the concept of ideal type’, de-veloped by Max Weber. We assert that Tapiola has been given an exemplary role: it has in a sense stood for ´all Finnish housing estates´.
