Abstract

This presentation focuses on the question of how to create teacher presence in online Finnish language courses. Impulses for this paper came from two online Finnish courses created in Aalto in 2017 and 2018. In these courses, the students gain introductory knowledge of Finnish. This presentation addresses the challenge of how to get the students to complete exercises on their own and keep up studying without dropping the course. We have observed that specific types of teacher interaction can overcome these challenges and reduce the perceived distance that online students may feel in their online courses. In this article, we show how we have been adding teachers ' presence and students ' interaction into an existing course and what benefits it has had. The overview also discusses the attitudes of the students towards the computer-assisted Finnish courses and considers how the teacher presence is evaluated.

Data for this paper was collected by following students' completion progress on the course website and executing a questionnaire survey to the students.
