City Sets Paris : Parallel Spaces

Research output: Artistic and non-textual formExhibitionArt in coproductionpeer-review

Commissioned by the Finnish Institute in Paris, the City Sets : Parallel Spaces exhibition 31 June-August 2012 presented new media art by the Finnish media artists Andy Best, Merja Puustinen and Heidi Tikka along with a selection of photographs by students of Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture (Finland) and L'École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs (France) in Paris. The images of Helsinki and Paris, and their specific placements, pursued an active relation to metro space - an imaginary continuity between the lived space and the space of the image. The photographic works were the result of two workshops between the Aalto University and L'École nationale supérieure des Arts Décoratifs which took place in the spring of 2012 in Helsinki and Paris. They were placed in different Paris metro station displays along the metro line 14 in Madeleine, Pyramides, Gare de Lyon and Bercy. At Hand by Heidi Tikka was screened at Europe on the metro line 3 and RE/F/r.ACE by Andy Best & Merja Puustinen in the restaurant boat Petit Bain by Seine. The exhibited student video works are also available in the City Sets Media Player online database,, which has been designed to run several video screens simultaneously to enable 'choral', multiple point view narratives of the cities, Helsinki and Paris. They were presented through June 2012 at the Finnish Institute in Paris (60, rue des Écoles 75005 Paris).
