N2 - Process industries have been acquiring and analyzing data from their assets and products to devise data-driven decisions, enhancing the safety and efficiency of their plants. With the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0), these industries are deploying modern digital technologies, such as the industrial internet of things (IIoT), big data analytics, cloud computing, and advanced data visualization techniques (virtual/augmented/mixed reality), reinventing process data analytic platforms for the process industries. Therefore, this chapter aims to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of process data analytic platforms built around the concept of Industry 4.0. First, it presents a brief overview of the industrial revolution followed by a high-level system architecture of a process data analytic platform. This system architecture consists of four elements: hardware and sensing layer, data management layer, application layer, and networking layer. The chapter provides a comprehensive overview of each of these elements while focussing on IIoT, data analytics and example applications that include predictive maintenance, remaining useful life estimation, process reliability assessment, and cyber-physical systems. As the physical and cyber domains of Industry 4.0 based process data analytics platforms are more integrated, the chapter presents the cyber-physical implications of such tight integration. The chapter concludes with a summary and outlook for Industry 4.0 based process data analytics platforms (PDAP).
