Abstract
BYOK [Bring Your Own Kitchen] is a week-long series of distributed food design experiments connecting edibles, forests, humans, and other creatures and critters from around the world. Each experimental session invites these participants to come together, share resources and experiences, and co-create recipes for something old or new.
We will approach food as a complex composite of substances, processes, experiences, and meanings – both existing and imagined – and collectively respond to various food-related themes (see events details below). We will forage in interconnected forests, cook an ancient grain risotto, sit around a fire, taste the flavors of extinction, explore the boundaries between soil and dirt, and much more.
Broadcasted from the Pixelache festival in Helsinki, Finland, the hybrid BYOK[itchen] is open to everyone, everywhere, via a portal of their choice.
In the spirit of popular TV cooking shows, everything is seemingly easy in the BYOK and you don’t need to have any specific knowledge, skills, or tools. In contrast to popular TV cooking shows, everyone is a Chef and there is no Master: grains, carrots, human hands, soil, mushrooms, Wi-Fi and radio waves join their creative multi-species vibes in BYOK, with the humble goal of making something happen.
What exactly that will be, we don’t know yet. We can’t promise a smooth convivial multi-species experience here – surprises and troubles are to be expected – and we intend to respond to them in creative, experimental ways. So, in the spirit of any proper food making, get ready to experiment. All you need to join our hybrid collaborative cooking show is to Bring Your Own Kitchen.
