Abstract

Curated by Leena-Maija Rossi and Kari Soinio.
Bodies, Borders, Crossings was first presented on Governors Island in New York in 2011. It has since then been shown at the Preus Museum (Horten, Norway) and Pori Art Museum (Finland) in 2013, at Galeria Juan Pardo Hereen/ICPNA (Lima Photography Biennial, Peru), and in Punto de Encuentro in Montevideo (Uruguay) 10.4. - 20.5. 2014.

The exhibition Bodies, Borders, Crossings both illuminates and challenges borders, whether geographic, national or corporeal. It explores the meaning of borders in the globalised world. Working with photography and video, the featured artists reassess apparently self-evident norms and examine the mechanisms of social control.

The artists in the exhibition are Jaakko Heikkilä, Catarina Ryöppy, Minna Rainio, Mark Roberts, Marja Pirilä, Hannele Rantala, Raakel Kuukka, Riikka Kuoppala, Minna Suoniemi and Elena Näsänen. The specific themes of the works include the issues of immigration and emigration, and such identity factors as gender, age, ethnicity and color. The curators of the exhibition are Leena-Maija Rossi and Kari Soinio.

Leena-Maija Rossi is the Director of the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York. She has previously worked as researcher and teacher in the University of Helsinki, as a cultural critic and freelance curator. Kari Soinio is a photographic artist who has exhibited his work in numerous solo- and group shows in both Finland and internationally. He lives and works in New York.

Bodies, Borders, Crossings continues a series of exhibitions on ethnicity, identity, multiculturality, human rights and globalization at the Pori Art Museum. Bodies, Borders, Crossings was first exhibited on Governors Island in New York in the summer of 2011. From there it continued to Norway’s Preus Museum in the spring of 2013 and opened at Pori Art Museum in Finland, in September. The exhibition will be on display in Pori until January 19, 2014.

Bodies, Borders, Crossings is produced by the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York and supported by the Alfred Kordelin Foundation, the Kone Foundation, the Finnish Cultural Foundation, the David and Nancy Speer Professorship in Finnish Studies at the University of Minnesota, Frame, the Finnish Ministry of Culture and Education, and the Finnish-Norwegian Institute.
