Abstract

Many countries have started initiatives to improve their cadastral systems to better meet the
current and future needs of society. Especially blockchain technology has drawn the attention
of land administration society during recent years. In contrast to the current centralized cadastral
systems, blockchain offers a possibility to create a decentralized and transparent database.
However, a thorough investigation of the possibilities and drawbacks of the utilization of
blockchain technology for registering cadastral information is still missing. In this paper, we
conduct a literature review of the operation and features of blockchain technology. Further, we
study potential benefits and barriers related to implementation of the technology using a
qualitative approach. Our findings indicate that at least technical, social and juridical barriers
exist.
