    Abstract

Reaction kinetics of the novel Outokumpu-Kennecott SMOC (Solid Matte Oxygen Converting) process and its flash oxidation stage are presented on the basis of laboratory studies in a laminar flow furnace at 500-1100°C and pO2 = N2-N2+75% O2. Particular attention was paid to the ignition of various feeds in different working conditions. In this article the behaviour of three copper mattes in simulated flash converting conditions was studied using a laminar flow furnace. The variables were copper content of matte, screen size fractions, preheating temperature of the reaction gas and the concentration of oxygen in the reaction gas.
