Abstract

The joint dynamics of two cracks propagating in opposite directions in polycarbonate, a material with high ductility and a large Fracture Process Zone (FPZ) has been investigated. The system presents depending on the initial geometry a phase diagram, with a regime where repulsion can be observed. Strain field analysis by Digital Image Correlation (DIC) shows how this can be understood according to the principle of local symmetry.
