Abstract

We have studied CO adsorption and desorption and O2 adsorption on clean Co(0001) and on polycrystalline Co using X-ray Photoemission Spectroscopy, Auger Electron Spectroscopy, Low Energy Electron Diffraction and Thermal Desorption Spectroscopy together with Monte Carlo simulations. The CO adsorption is molecular on the Co(0001) surface. The oxygenating of these surfaces yields similar behaviour at low oxygen coverages, but a thicker oxide layer is grown on Co(poly) as compared to Co(0001), possibly due to grain-boundary activated growth.
