    Abstract

The German-born marine painter Adolf Bock (1890-1968) worked in Germany, Finland and Sweden. He witnessed the changes these three societies went through from the years before WW I until the era after WW II. The life story of Adolf Bock raises questions about human life in a changing world, the individual reasons for emigration and the ways of adaptation. It also provokes thoughts about the choices one artist made while working in between art, politics and propaganda in the pre-war, wartime and post-war Europe, and as a citizen under a totalitarian regime.
