About the seat-dip effect in the presence of audience

The seat-dip effect is a collection of phenomena attributable to sound waves diffracting from the tops of the seat backs, and reflecting between the seats that form a regular structure comparable to the wavelength of the low end of audible frequency range. The audience becomes a part of that structure when seated. Thus far, most measurements on the seat-dip effect have been made in unoccupied halls, due to the rather challenging task of gathering hundreds of audience members to listen to unpleasant excitation signals. At first glance, the measurements that do exist in occupied halls show that the seat-dip effect does not change much in the presence of audience. However, a deeper inspection of previously reported measurements together with the analysis of recent measurements in three fully occupied performance spaces show that the influence of presence of audience on the seat-dip effect depends on the floor and the seat type. With the typical floor and seat dimensions, the frequency of the main attenuation dip decreases in the presence of audience. Furthermore, the level of the main dip as well as a range of frequencies below the dip is reduced.
