A model for the distant tail field: ISEE 3 revisited

Abstract

We construct a simple model for the distant (R > 40 R(E)) magnetotail using data from the ISEE 3 magnetic field instrument. The data are divided into plasma sheet and lobe categories using the plasma measurements. We present the average behavior of the field in various projections, and show that a relatively simple mathematical model can be used to describe the distant tail magnetic field. The model results are in good accordance with previously published GEOTAIL observations.
