Towards Sustainable Gold Recovery from Tailings (GoldTail)

Project Details

Description

The GoldTail project aims at the sustainable gold recovery from underutilized mining waste tailings by the application of cyanide-free methods, through a joint collaboration between Aalto University (Finland) and Witwatersrand University (South Africa). GoldTail targets high yield-high purity gold extraction from low concentration gold tailings with low chemical and energy consumption by gold leaching in chloride and alternatively in ionic liquid media. Gold recovery is supported by in-situ recovery on 3D carbon electrodes, whilst the application of selective gaseous gold extraction will also be explored. GoldTail promotes the material efficiency by turning side-streams into a feasible raw materials.
