Sustainable Exploration and Advancement of Baltic Sea

Project Details

Description

WATERWAYS examines the ongoing changes in the use of waterways in the Baltic Sea, focusing on maritime safety and sustainability. We aim to understand and mitigate environmental and safety risks arising from both traditional and new maritime activities by developing innovative data-driven methods and AI tools for monitoring and assessment. The research is conducted as an interdisciplinary collaboration involving experts in computer science, marine technology, environmental sciences, and maritime law from Finnish universities and research institutes that are leaders in the field of maritime-related studies. Our goal is to provide new insights, information, and tools that support the sustainable use of marine waterways, benefiting both society and the scientific community. By integrating diverse data sources and developing advanced risk models and scenario tools, we aim to enhance maritime safety, support decision-making, and promote the sustainable development of the Baltic Sea region.
