Description

Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) are city neighborhoods or areas in which the energy demand is lower than energy supply from local sustainable energy sources during some period, such as a year. PEDs will form the next generation in the future energy systems since phasing out fossil fuels will require completely new system thinking. This project develops methods and tools for simulating and optimizing the operation of PEDs, and for planning either new PEDs, or converting existing districts to PEDs by extending the system with emission-free energy sources and operating them more efficiently. The PED planning problem is complicated, because it is affected by uncertainties in demand forecasts and intermittent renewable energy production. Also multiple economic, environmental, technical and social criteria must be considered when choosing the 'best design'. Therefore multicriteria decision analysis should be an integral part of the planning methodology.
