Radio Network Optimization for Heterogeneous Machine Connectivity

The global trend of digitalization and the internet of everything (IoE) paradigm require pervasive wireless connectivity; the number of connected mobile devices predicted to grow to 12B by 2021. Due to the rapidly increasing numbers of connected devices, a major part of the capacity (or bandwidth) and power consumption is due to the wireless system control overhead, which needs to be smartly minimized without sacrificing system performance. This problem is exacerbated by the heterogeneity of the requirements of different types of machine type access with varying priority levels and quality of service targets over large area coverage. The objective of this project is to develop methods to balance energy vs spectral efficiency, while minimizing control information, and supporting huge numbers of connected devices with varying priority levels and QoS targets over large area coverage.
