Molecular resolution at solid-liquid interfaces

Project Details

Description

The interaction of water with solid surfaces is dominant in a wide variety of natural and technological processes. The development of high resolution microscopy in liquids heralded an optimism that reliable atomic and molecular resolution at solid-liquid interfaces would soon be readily available, opening the door to major advances in understanding and technology. However, despite several outstanding successes, it has been plagued by challenges in interpretation. A major element in the slow progress is the inherent challenges the solid-liquid environment provides for simulations. The MERLIN project will develop a novel methodology for solid-liquid simulations, encapsulating the chemical and atomic structure of the surface, the nature and structure of the solution in a machine learning approach.
