Immersive Concert for Homes

Project Details

Description

The ICHO project will investigate new scientific methods to bring the immersive concert experience to people's homes with the help of head-tracked headphones and sophisticated signal processing techniques. In the proposed scheme, a live music concert is recorded with close microphones to get the sound of different instruments on individual audio tracks. At the consumer's side, which may be a future hand-held device, the instrument streams are processed in real time. The nearly anechoic signals are convolved with spatial impulse responses measured from real spaces, as they produce the most authentic listening experience. The measured acoustics, i.e., the spatial impulse responses from all sources, are decomposed with the Spatial sound Decomposition Method (SDM) developed at Aalto University. These spatial responses are further parametrized and implemented in a computationally efficient manner with the help of Velvet Noise Filters (VNF), also invented at Aalto University.
