The proposed project seeks algebraic and number theoretic models for physical phenomena related to wireless communications and distributed data storage. These models enable us to design protocols and construct codes of high quality. During this five-year project numerous, so-called ring-linear codes will be constructed with different applications in mind such as wireless communications, hard disk manufacturing, and network coding. In addition, our ambitious but realistic goal is to initiate a new field of algebraic physical layer distributed storage code design and thereby encourage research in the related communities among mathematicians, computer scientist, electrical engineers, and industrial researchers.
