Description
The Education in an Age of Multiple Crises: Towards Gender Equality, Democracy and Transformative Learning project examines the connection between gendered injustice and multiple crises. The main goal of the project is to understand how climate change is intertwined with other simultaneous social and environmental crises and how they affect the education of girls and young women. The project consists of three work packages that examine: 1) how the simultaneous short- and long-term factors and crises affecting the environment and society affect educational inequality; 2) how young women experience and deal with adversity and worries during multiple crises, how they envision their future and how they build collective resilience; and 3) what is the role of educational approaches and methods in increasing young people's resilience, promoting equality and equality, supporting the empowerment of girls and young women, and preparing for future crises. The project's case studies are located in Ecuador, Kenya and Finland. The research uses both quantitative and qualitative methods: statistical and spatial analysis, reviews of written materials, workshops, interviews and observation. The analysis combines a political ecology approach with an intersectional analysis that helps to understand how the categories of gender, race, class, nationality, ethnicity, age and ability shape power relations and thus communities' exposure to simultaneous crises, recovery from them and effects on the education of girls and young women. Based on the research results, action recommendations are given and pedagogical tools are developed to support the smooth educational paths, well-being and social participation of marginalized young people, supporting justice and democracy.
