In this project the ignition of ultra-lean methane-air mixtures with n-heptane is studied, especially the role of real engine circumstances on the ignition. Understanding the ignition process is essential when designing and controlling new gas combustion engine concepts with high efficiency and capable of a dynamic operation. This four-year project is a cooperation between Aalto University and Åbo Akademi University. Experimental work is mainly carried out using an optical research engine located in Aalto University. Åbo Akademi University research focus is on modeling of the ignition in turbulent flows using a detailed chemistry description.
