Backscatter enabled sustainable monitoring Infrastructure for assisted living (BESIMAL)

Project Details

Description

Virtually every country in the world is experiencing growth in the number and proportion of older persons in their population. Several studies suggest that most seniors want to stay in their homes as they age. This calls for Ambient Assisted Living where the environment at home is able to anticipate the needs of the inhabitants and automatically accomplish tasks that they cannot do themselves. In this project, we focus on the sensing and inference part needed for such a system. We believe that Radio Frequency Inference technology based on Ambient Backscatter Sensing is particularly suitable for the task. In this project we will develop suitable wireless communications and signal processing methods that allow location, breathing rate and identity information of the monitored person be extracted from the receiver RF signals. We will evaluate the achievable performance of the system experimentally using a digitally printed tag array that is aesthetic and ecological.
