AI spider silk threading

Project Details

Description

Biological production of materials is a megatrend in our society driven by sustainability. Apart from sustainable raw-materials, we are facing global challenges due to the environmental burden of non-degradable materials. It is estimated that by 2050 there will be a 1:1 ratio of plastics to fish in the ocean. Biomaterials is a highly potential answer to the non-degradability.
The objective of this project is to mimic the full silk pultrusion mechanism of spiders using reinforcement learning and robotic micromanipulation to produce high-toughness artificial silk and gain deep insight of the mechanosensitive structural transitions leading to fiber formation.
The expected results of the project will impact both biomaterials and AI. The research will be conducted by a highly interdisciplinary consortium composed of three very talented research groups in biomaterials, reinforcement learning and microrobotics.
