2D Layered Materials for Photonics

In this project novel two-dimensional (2D) layered materials are developed and studied, to fabricate photonic components. The fabrication and properties of the prototype 2D material graphene are now reasonably well known but other similar materials such as molybdenum disulphide, tungsten disulphide and gallium selenide (and especially 2D composites) are still quite completely unexplored and their fabrication technology is very primitive. The main focus of research is to study the basic properties of these materials. In addition both passive (waveguides, photodetectors) and active (THz emitters, modulators and switches) photonic devices are studied and finally integrated in a prototype photonic circuit.
