Postdoctoral Researcher Mateusz Janiszewski and Staff Scientist Lauri Uotinen received the 2019 Award for Achievements in Teaching. The grounds for selection stated that Lauri Uotinen and Mateusz Janiszewski have used new technology in developing a virtual learning environment (VR). In co-operation with teachers from different fields they have produced a virtual underground tunnel. The virtual environment allows students to practice and complete learning assignments at their own pace and as many times as is required before entering the physical tunnel environment, with instructions available to students throughout the process. Alongside their development work, Uotinen and Janiszewski have also conducted educational research, studying the usefulness of the newly developed environment from a students’ point of view. Students have appreciated the new learning environment and found it useful and a good support for completing the actual learning assignment. The new environment also promotes students’ well-being by increasing flexibility and support in the learning process. Study results show that students’ learning outcomes have improved as well. The environment has been developed further with help from student feedback.
