Artistic and research interests

Tuuli Mattelmäki is expert in co-design and service design. She acts as associate professor at Aalto University Department of Design and the leader of the ENCORE Research Group. The starting point for her research has been in empathic and explorative approaches in human-centered design, and more recently, she has been interested in public sector and service design related questions. In her teaching and research, she collaborates with practice, and she has been involved e.g. with projects that address wellbeing and health care. She has had several expert positions in number of instances, and recently also experience in working as a lead service designer in Helsinki based service design consultancy Hellon addressing, among others, projects that address citizen participation. Her research output covers 3 edited books, 1 monograph, 35 peer reviewed scientific articles in journals, conferences, and ca 40 non-refereed scientific articles and book chapters. She was awarded as 'The Industrial Designer of the Year’ 2008  by the Industrial Designer Association TKO and ORNAMO for her contribution to design research.
