    Personal profile

    Artistic and research interests

Designer-researcher Luis Vega specializes in cross-cultural collaboration. Informed by the dynamics of people, places, and processes, his work employs craft as a platform to investigate ways of socializing knowledge through materiality. In addition to running an award-winning practice, he teaches design and speaks at conferences. His projects have been published widely and exhibited in galleries, museums, fairs, and biennials in cities like Hong Kong, London, Milan, New York, and Tokyo.

In 2018, Luis was appointed Program Director of Industrial Design at the prestigious Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico City, where he completed his bachelor's degree in 2009. Previous roles include Head of Design, External Consultant, and Visiting Researcher in various organizations involved in the craft and design sector internationally. He holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Modern Craft from the Kyoto Institute of Technology (2014) and a Master of Arts in International Design Business Management from Aalto University (2018).

Since 2019, Luis works as a doctoral candidate in the Empirica Research Group at the Department of Design. His doctoral research concentrates on the sociomateriality of distributed cognitive processes. Drawing on an interdisciplinary practice-led research approach, he examines how people think with things during collective acts of making. Luis's research is part of the MakerStudioPeda project, an ongoing investigation into the role of materiality, maker practices, and design studio pedagogy in the digital age. The project is funded by the Academy of Finland and conducted jointly with the University of Helsinki in four Nordic countries.
