Personal profile

Artistic and research interests

Lena Reimann is a Research Fellow at the Water and Development Research Group (WDRG) of the Department of Built Environment at Aalto University. Her research focuses on the spatial analysis of population dynamics, particularly internal migration and social vulnerability, in the context of water-related hazards. Her work involves developing geospatial datasets and performing spatial data analysis at continental to global scales.

After completing her PhD in the Coastal Risks and Sea-Level Rise research group at Kiel University, Germany, Lena spent four years as a postdoc at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. During her PhD, she developed spatial modeling approaches and datasets to explore future population exposure to sea-level rise under various climate and socioeconomic scenarios (Shared Socioeconomic Pathways, SSPs). As a postdoc, she broadened this work, extending it from sea-level rise to additional (water-related) climate hazards; from exposure to social vulnerability; and from continental- to global-scale assessments. During her time at WDRG, she aims to further build on this work, with a particular focus on understanding how social vulnerability shapes migration responses under past, present, and future conditions.
