Artistic and research interests

Harald Arnkil is an artist, educator and colour researcher. He held the position of Senior University Lecturer in Colour Studies until his retirement from Aalto university in September 2019.  Arnkil is currently finalising his doctoral thesis for Aalto ARTS under the title An Exploration of Colour in Contemporary Art. Arnkil’s main research interest are the perception and experience of colour colour in art, design and architecture. Arnkil has written a widely-used textbook, Värit havaintojen maailmassa (2007, updated and revised 2021). It was published in 2013 in English as Colours in the Visual World. Arnkil’s other research interests include multisensory experience and the cultural connections between art, colour and music. Arnkil’s art works are included in several major museums in Finland as well as public and private art collections in Finland and abroad. HArald Arnkil is a member of the international Colour Literacy project Team (colourliteracy.org) since 2020.
