Profile Information

The research of the Optics and Photonics group covers a range of topics of modern optics and photonics. Our work encompasses various aspects of physical optics, particularly in the nano scale, development of methods to manipulate matter with laser light, characterization of high-frequency acoustic disturbances in solids by optical means as well as design and construction of novel light sources. The work involves use of both theoretical and experimental techniques and it is carried out in close collaboration with local, national and international research partners.

The Optics and Photonics group’s research is funded mostly by the Academy of Finland, national graduate schools, private foundations, and direct contracts from industry. The group’s premises are in Micronova, the national micro- and nanotechnology center located on the Otaniemi campus.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. Our work contributes towards the following SDG(s):

  • SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy
