State-of-the-art campus design 2: University campuses

Press/Media: Social media activity

Description

One of the biggest changes that campuses face is the campus-city relation. Campus areas have become nodes of urban change as demographic and economic transitions impact cities. An important difference between a generic city and a campus is that a campus is basically a recipe for heterogenous ingredients. In an increasingly urbanising world, where proximity and knowledge are power, metabolism and synergy between the campus and the city become crucial for both. It is important that when a visitor enters the campus, its uniqueness is felt. This concerns also so-called univercities, where the surrounding open city and campus mix. In univercities, there is a special demand for expressing the identity of the campus by its outdoor areas. A visitor should feel entering a new realm. It takes time to develop a functioning and fruitful campus whether it is completely new, a result of a merger, or a fused univercity.
