What does it mean to design an ecosystem?

Ecosystem design is an understudied topic in management research. Still, the ecosystem theory, although derived from strategic management, has an important impact on operations management by affecting supply chains and organisational setups. In this paper, we present the findings from a rapid review integrating several fields of research using the ecosystem theory either directly, or analogically, as a conceptual model when designing interrelated behaviour in complex systems. The synthesis proposes that interrelationships between rules of engagement, and hierarchy, have direct implications for the design method and resulting ecosystem type.
