Description

Living matter is the material basis of life. Biological systems, from molecular assemblies to cells to animal groups, exploit emergent collective phenomena in soft active matter, such as active flows, jamming, athermal fluctuations, adaptivity, etc., to perform biological functions. This workshop aims to discuss the physics behind the distinctive properties of living matter, and how they enable biological functions in different systems. To this end, we will bring together an interdisciplinary group of scientists, including both theorists and experimentalists from a broad spectrum spanning from non-equilibrium physics to the quantitative life sciences. The workshop will have four sessions focused on biological systems at different scales: the intracellular medium, bacterial colonies, tissues, and organisms. We hope that the workshop will help to distill both common principles and important differences between the physics of living matter across scales
