Description

As the first PhD candidate to participate in a recently established joint PhD program between Aalto University in Finland and Swinburne University of Technology in Australia, I am spending my first year of the three-year PhD program in Melbourne to undertake research in close collaboration with Wimmera Health Care Group, a regional hospital. The topic of the research is amplifying unheard voices in participatory design. The project aims to move beyond just getting people with different positionalities together and to explore how to actively overcome power imbalances embedded within organisational structures and establish co-creation strategies to empower all employees to contribute when addressing wicked challenges. By engaging in various case studies across the three different locations of Melbourne, New York, and Helsinki, the project aims to find commonalities and differences in how people in different contexts and cultures approach participation.
