A film program of five Pop-Gothic crime movies curated for the Midnight Sun Film Festival 2022."The Pop-Gothic crime movie context of the 60s shall in this little series of screenings get considered as a Pan-European phenomenon, an exercise in collective dreaming in different but mutually understandable for inter-related idioms. Let’s say that the starting point for the international postwar crime revolution was Henri-Georges Clouzot’s 1955 masterpiece of Who’s-Messing-Around-With-My-Brain cinema Les Diaboliques; let’s add that Hammer’s Terence Fisher-directed colour horror watershed The Curse of Frankenstein (1957) provided vital inspiration; but something was missing… a something that maybe Arne Mattsson’s The Lady in Black (Damen i svart) provided the following year: humour. We shall investigate how it’s all related! Five gems from five countries shall offer all the clues we’ll ever need!"
