This text aims to provide a concise introduction to the international research seminar to be held in honour of the centenary of the birth of the renowned architect Reima Pietilä (1923-1993), under the title: “New landscape explorations around materiality: Raili and Reima Pietilä”. This event is part of a series of activities proposed on the occasion of this important commemoration and aims to complement the various approaches that have been made over the years to Pietilä’s work.

The seminar focuses on the exploration of new relationships between architecture and landscape, building on the material richness that characterised the work of the experimental architects Raili and Reima. The main focus of the event is to highlight the formal and material aspects that defined the projects of this outstanding pair of architects, as well as their cultural and formal relationships with the context.

Distinguished speakers, whose research and professional careers have focused on the work of Raili and Reima Pietilä, are part of this event. Among them are Aino Niskanen, Roger Connah, Antonello Alici, and Luis Miguel Cortés, who will offer their knowledge and experience in their respective lectures. The seminar will take place at the Department of Architecture of Aalto University. This setting will provide a conducive environment for the exchange of ideas and reflection on the challenges and opportunities that arise in addressing the new relationships between architecture and landscape.

In addition to honouring the centenary of the birth of architect Reima Pietilä, this seminar aims to contribute to the valorisation and dissemination of Raili and Reima Pietilä’s outstanding career. Through this event, it seeks to highlight their importance in the field of architecture, promoting a deeper understanding of their contribution to architecture, recognising their achievements and their lasting legacy, which undoubtedly contributed to breaking new ground as forerunners of current architectural trends.
