Description
Nature-positive approaches to renewable energy production- Interactive Roundtables Talks and Panel Discussion session (HYBRID)
Conference session in the 2024 Sustainability Research and Innovation Congress / Sustainability Science Days, 10-14 June, 2024 in Helsinki, Finland
Nature is facing an unprecedented challenge as our current energy production and consumption are causing a decline in biodiversity and natural systems. This forces us to question the current way of living and re-imagine, for instance, our energy systems to create a future where energy production not only meets our needs but also restores and enhances nature. Designing renewable energy production following these principles may be
called nature-positive.
Nature-positive energy solutions go beyond minimizing harm; they actively enhance nature by designing power plants as habitats for local flora and fauna. This approach contrasts with isolating energy production systems
from their surroundings as industrial sites. Instead, it emphasizes incorporating the needs of the natural world into energy infrastructure design, going beyond human requirements.
This session showcases the latest advancements and research in this emerging field, focusing on wind and solar power. With contributions from industry, researchers, and other stakeholders, the session aims to uncover pathways for renewable energy production that coexist harmoniously with natural ecosystems. The emphasis is on practical, actionable strategies aligning technological advancements with ecological integrity, thereby contributing to a sustainable energy future.
