Description
How often do you feel uncomfortable indoors? It might be the stifling heat in the summer or the heavy, humid air in a meeting room after hours of discussion. Or perhaps it's the drafts from cold walls disrupting the warmth of a cozy winter space. What if we could solve these issues through the careful use of low-carbon building materials? This keynote speech explores an innovative approach to construction, focusing on low-carbon and natural materials that, when correctly implemented, can significantly mitigate indoor discomfort. It advocates for a shift from conventional, energy-intensive, petrol-based materials to low-carbon solutions that utilise bio-based insulation, earthen or stone walls, and hygroscopic finishes to naturally regulate indoor hygrothermal conditions. Implementing these solutions enables building materials to work as passive systems that improve indoor comfort and occupants’ health. Moreover, these material solutions reduce our reliance on mechanical HVAC systems, resulting in a substantial decrease in both embodied and operational emissions.
The keynote highlights how informed material choices can not only create more comfortable and healthier indoor environments but also support the transition towards a climate-neutral future by reducing the carbon footprint of our building practices.
