Description
The world and Finland are experiencing a staggering and unprecedented process of urbanization. This megatrend requires new operational and methodological frameworks as well as new ways of thinking in which we integrate the legitimate aspirations of individuals and communities for wellbeing and fulfilling lives with our current understanding of the limits and possibilities of the biosphere. In this context, the FIURES project appears as an answer to a global and national challenge and as an opportunity to expand the incipient knowledge of Finland in the matter of Urban Resilience. In particular, the proposed project aims at developing new and necessary knowledge in two levels. Firstly, the project will explore the conceptual and methodological connections between resilience and other highly transversal concepts (sustainability, adaptability, transformability) in urban planning, management and co-governance with a special attention to the interplay between different disciplines and to their potential integration.
Secondly, the project will use a novel approach in which recent history and present will be both systematically analyzed in order to understand the logics and mechanisms operating behind (Finnish) Urban Resilience and in which environmental, social and economic aspects will be integrated to define new frameworks and policy briefs to make Finnish cities more resilient in the future. The collaboration with cities, urban stakeholders and external experts will permit the co-generation ok knowledge and tools that, will eventually feed the ontological part of the work.
