The world and Finland are experiencing a staggering process of urbanization. This megatrend requires new operational and methodological frameworks as well as new ways of thinking through which we can integrate the legitimate aspirations of individuals and communities with our current understanding of the limits of the biosphere. The RESFIN project will provide a significant contribution to currently non-existing systematic studies on urban resilience by increasing our understanding of the spatial, social, organizational and economic mechanisms that cities use for accommodating to sudden and unexpected changes without losing their functionality or identity. The goal of the project is to draw from the systematic study of resilient responses in a set of Finnish Cities (Tampere, Turku and Lahti) during recent history in order to identify the factors and patterns behind urban resilience and to co-elaborate with municipalities and a panel of experts new toolboxes for future urban resilience.
