Description
This thesis explores the intersection of sound arts, literature, and performativity through a multimedia performance centered on the life and works of Taiwanese writer Sānmáo. By focusing on auditory perception and the transformative potential of sound, the research reveals how sound serves as a vital medium for creating immersive artistic experiences. This approach expands the audience's imaginative space, transcends traditional narrative boundaries, and challenges the dominance of visual elements in audio-visual performances. The study develops a unique method for audio-visual performance that transforms literary text into an engaging sonic experience. By examining Sānmáo's autobiographical works, the research investigates how sound can convey emotional landscapes, preserve cultural memory, and offer fresh narrative expressions.
Using interdisciplinary methods, the research incorporates textual sonification techniques alongside sophisticated sound design. Selected passages from Sānmáo's writings are integrated and converted into sound using digital tools like TouchDesigner and Ableton Live, with custom sound design translating textual nuances into rich auditory experiences.
The performance demonstrated how sound can break free from conventional narrative limits, creating a multi-layered sensory experience. Audience feedback highlighted the work’s ability to evoke deep emotional responses and provide unique insights into Sānmáo's life and literary journey. The research emphasizes sound's capacity to communicate complex emotional narratives in ways that go beyond traditional representational methods.
This thesis contributes to fields such as sound art, performance studies, and new media by introducing text-to-sound conversion techniques. It challenges established paradigms of artistic representation, illustrating how technology can reinterpret and reimagine literary narratives. The research opens new avenues for understanding performativity, technological mediation, and the intricate connections between art, technology, and cultural memory.
