Story by Design: Visual Narratives AWP, LA Convention Center, Thursday, March 31, 2016 There is a secret history of designed works in fiction, from Tristram Shandy to House of Leaves. Incorporating the tools of design, authors can create works of visual literature in which typography, image, and visual sequence are integral. Starting from writing and print design, these designers-as-authors, interactive storytellers, professors, and publishers of visual narrative explore the design thinking behind these works. This panel is a writer’s bridge to the visual and interactive realms Moderator: Zach Dodson cofounded featherproof books in 2005. He is the author of boring boring boring... and Bats of the Republic, an illuminated novel. His hybrid work has appeared in many literary and design publications. He is a professor of practice at Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland. Stephen Farrell is a visual storyteller, typographer, director, and painter in Chicago. He cocreated the illuminated novel, VAS: An Opera in Flatland, and the animated film and iPad novel, TOC. Stephen teaches storytelling and information design at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Samantha Gorman is a writer working at the intersection of text, cinema, performance, and digital culture. Her hybrid iPad novel PRY [prynovella.com] with Danny Cannizzaro has been showcased at film festivals, game festivals, and book review sites. She holds MFA/BA from Brown in digital literature. Warren Lehrer is a writer/artist, pioneer of visual literature. Awards include Brendan Gill Prize, IPPY Outstanding Book of the Year, Best New Fiction (USA Best Books), Media That Matters, and an NEA Fellowship.
