Holappa, L. (Speaker)

Activity: Talk or presentation typesConference presentation

Iron and steel making is an energy-intensive branch of industry. Consequently, it is playing a significant role in global energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. The jointly approved target of limiting the global warming by 2050 is extremely challenging. In order to actualize its own share in cutting CO2 emissions, great advancements must be done.
The present situation and feasible scenarios for the future are described. Potential meth-ods to decrease CO2 emissions in current processes via improved energy efficiency, increas-ing recycling and alternative energy sources are considered. Development programs for cur-rent and novel innovative processes as well as trends of energy usage in the future are sur-veyed. Finally, a simplified holistic model is represented demonstrating different actions for global solution of the steel industries´ CO2 emissions problem.
