Lecture and Workshop — Critical Story-Making. Speculative Design and beyond.
Designer and researcher Emilia Tikka will give an introduction to the field of discursive design, including her own method merging humanities, speculative design and biomedical research. Her current research explores societal and philosophical implications of novel biotechnologies such as genome editing and synthetic biology.
How can design function as a form of discursive practice to “stay with the trouble”(1) and engage with contemporary challenges? This question will be explored in the workshop through tangible story-making with speculative design. The participants will imagine and craft alternative political and socio-cultural systems through hands-on making, scenario-building and discussion. The workshop aims to inspire students to find their individual approach to design as a discursive practice.
